broken dreams and hardened hearts “I wonder if I hit my head hard enough on the wall, would it kill me and end this misery?” Aspen thought out loud. Sure, she wasn’t the most studious, or actually, studious at all, but making her learn from Guinevere Martell? They had to be joking! The sheer disbelief of it all had overshadowed anger when the instructor had called her into his office to give her the notice that she was to improve her magic skills while teaching Gwen weapons, but the anger was setting in now. She looked longingly out the window to see clear skies, the classroom was the last place she ever wanted to be, but especially not today. Her only comfort was that they were doing magic first, get it over with, or something like that. Aspen sighed and pushed herself on top of a desk, waiting. Waiting, waiting, waiting, great Hylia was the girl ever going to show? Aspen wasn’t fond of Gwen, no, not fond of her at all. The way everyone seemed to flock around her was infuriating, and she was very close to Rath Jinqu, the server at the Lumpy Pumpkin. If Gwen got too close to him, she might pry Aspen’s secrets out of the very impressionable boy. She sighed again. It was really bordering on ridiculous that she must wait here to do the study session for so long. She leaned back on the desk so far that her head and long red hair hung over the side of it. After they were done learning from those awful tomes, she’d make Gwen pay with a weapons training she’d never forget. Anger and vengeance pooled in her heart, fueled on by the never ending waiting! this is everything i wanted tonight. Gwen wasn't purposely taking as long as possible to get ready for her remedial lessons, but - okay, maybe she was taking as long as possible to get ready. She always cared about her appearance, of course, but usually she only put in the amount of effort she currently was if she really wanted to impress someone. She was not looking to impress anyone. She was delaying. She absolutely, one hundred percent, did not want to go to her remedial lessons. Not that she minded tutoring, but this tutor in particular really got on her nerves.
Remedial lessons with Aspen Lucard. What a joke! Admittedly, Gwen was not the best with traditional weapons - no matter how hard she tried, she never seemed to get the technique right, or her reflexes were too slow or her tactics too wild - and Aspen was much better at sheer physical brutality than she, but to have her tutor Gwen? Absurd. Gwen actually cared about doing well in the Academy and did her best no matter how hard she was struggling; Aspen didn't even bother to show up for class half the time. Frankly, it was insulting to be paired up with such a slacker.
She sighed to herself, finished fixing the wire flowers affixed to her twin tails, and picked up the massive stack of tomes she was to bring to the lessons. At least she would be tutoring Aspen first. Magic wasn't exactly hard, especially when you had the help of tomes that literally told you exactly what to do. So long as Aspen could read, the magic lesson would go quickly. Hopefully the weapons lesson would be the same, and then they could both go their separate ways and pretend this never happened.
Guinevere marched into the tutoring classroom and dropped the tomes on a clear table with a heavy thud, then quickly laid them all out side by side. Each was emblazoned with a different symbol. She pointedly did not look at Aspen.
"What is your element, Miss Lucard?" she asked coldly, not even bothering to say hello or apologize for her tardiness. She did not waste time on niceties for shrieking harpies such as this girl. | TAGGED: Aspen Lucard

broken dreams and hardened hearts “Oh please, not with the formalities, Gwen-ny,” Aspen spat, hoping to annoy the girl by using the revolting nickname. “My element is fire, by the way. Fire burning hot, and fire burning red,” she said. She didn’t see why she had to put up with this. If someone came charging her down with a giant axe, a book wasn’t going to help stop them from cleaving her in half. A sword was going to do that. Honestly, the girl was stupid to rely on magic so much. Aspen kicked her legs into the air as she lay back on the table, admiring her leather boots, not bothering to fix her skirt. She tilted her head to the side to see a huge pile of tomes that Gwen had brought with her. Completely and utterly unnecessary. “Curly haired bitch,” Aspen muttered under her breath. Gwen was definitely getting the better end of the deal – Aspen knew how to handle herself in a fight, and it was definitely a more useful skill than reading, for Hylia’s sake. “Honestly, I don’t know why I have to learn this stuff, it’s not like I’m ever going to use it,” she whined. Still, she couldn’t admit defeat to Gwen of all people. She grabbed a tome off of the table next to her and opened it to a random page, still lying on the desk. The writing was a garbled mess. Whoever had written this had written the entire thing in script, a horrible decision really. It was completely illegible. She put the book back down, pretending like she’d understood it with perfect clarity. “Not worth my time. Let’s go work on weapons now,” she said, and rolled off the desk to land on her feet, fully intending to escape away from the dreaded tomes and into the fresh air. this is everything i wanted tonight. Gwen-ny. What kind of nickname was that? Did Aspen lack the imagination to come up with a legitimate insult? Not surprising; she was too stupid to pass even the simplest classes. And she was such a melodramatic child. Fire burning hot and fire burning red, Gwen mimicked internally, her lips thinning in disdain. Hylia only knew why the Academy saw fit to let this girl run around with live steel. She was a danger to herself and everyone around her with a head that full of air.
Gwen tuned out for a bit, trying really hard to find her inner happy place, praying to Hylia to grant her the grace and strength she needed to make it through this lesson without committing homicide. Every second she spent around Aspen filled her with more and more pity for her poor friend Rath. How he put up with such an insufferable child for a manager was beyond her.
She was drawn out of her reverie by Aspen picking up one of the tomes, and she just looked at Aspen, half-hoping that she would take the initiative, but - nope. She flipped open to a random page and threw it down again, just like that.
Patience wearing thin, Gwen snatched up a wind tome - though she hardly needed it at this point, not for wind anyway - and sent a gust of air at Aspen as she was rolling off the table. It wouldn't be enough to hurt her, just- knock her off her feet.
"Unless you are incapable of something so simple as reading, which, to be quite honest, would explain a lot" Gwen started primly, going so far as to even look down her nose at the other girl, "then surely you can suffer through something as useless as a basic magic lesson without too much difficulty. Unless, of course, it is too complex for a mind as... simple... as yours." | TAGGED: Aspen Lucard
NOTES: OOOOOO SHE SAID YOU CAN'T READ

broken dreams and hardened hearts Aspen fell to the ground as the sudden gust of wind smacked into her torso, knocking a knee on the table rather painfully. She glared up at Gwen, pretending again that she wasn’t hurt by the dig at her inability to grasp tomes. Gwen wouldn’t be getting away with insulting her one more time, no, she couldn’t let her keep talking like that. Honestly, could she be any more insufferable? The more words that came out of Gwen’s mouth, the more Aspen wanted to smack her across that pretty face. Why she was so popular was the eternal mystery. Lots of friends just meant lots of letdowns. The other squires should know better than to befriend such a heartless bitch. Aspen pushed herself up off of the ground and sat at the desk upon which tomes were stacked, just wanting to get it over with as quickly as possible, now that it was apparent that she wasn’t going to be able to leave. If Gwen stopped obeying the rules so much, she might learn to get a personality. She scanned the tomes a little more carefully now, and selected one that looked like it had to be a fire tome. It wasn’t labeled, but it was red, so she figured it had to be it. If she could just get Gwen to teach her a spell without having to read too closely into the text, she could be on her way without Gwen insulting her any more. She opened the book to the first page and said, bitingly, “Come on then, teach me, if you’re so good! Just wait, I’m going to do so much better with these than you are with the weapons. You’re going to want to apologize to me after our next lesson.” Aspen smirked. “Come on teach, I haven’t got all day!” She willed herself to have that confidence transferred into actual luck with magic. If ever she needed a prayer to work, it was now. Tagged: @gwen Notes: dumb as shit She's just insulting herself now, Gwen doesn't even have to do work anymore. XD Word Count: 330
