| Cassie enjoyed taking some time out of her day to simply ride Epona around the track. Her mare certainly did not need to be cooped up in her stable all day, nor did she have to rest in the enclosed pasture that the other horses lounged in. As much as she adored the other animals on the Ranch, she knew there was something special about the mare. Her coloring was certainly different than the other horses they kept, and her eyes were such the deepest blue like her own. The two of them were bonded in a way that could not be broken over time or distance. Pink lips curled into a smile as she finished saddling Epona properly. Such a good girl she was when she stayed absolutely still for herself alone. Neither Papa or Seth could properly saddle Epona without her fidgeting or snorting in annoyance at the two males. Her father had better luck than most, but for some reason the mare did not care for Seth too much. It baffled Cassie, because she really did like the redheaded male. Perhaps more than she should.
Her cheeks felt rather warm and she knew Epona was looking at her like she was insane. Cassie huffed as she placed her hands on her hips. “There is nothing wrong with him, you know. You’re just so picky,” she murmured. Her only response was to have Epona nudge her muzzle against her chest playfully. Such a spoiled horse she was. Giggling to herself, she pressed a kiss to Epona’s warm nose before moving to the mare’s side. It only took a little effort to haul herself up onto the mare’s back before settling herself comfortably to ride sidesaddle. Cassie had opted to wear a summer dress today since her father had not assigned her too many chores today. Riding in a dress was not the most comfortable, but she would rather not run back inside and have to change when she had just settled onto Epona. Her mare would know what the right speed to run at, and that was so when she exited the stable and started at an easy canter.
Everything was as it should be as Epona set off to circle around the track. There would be no attempting to beat her current record today. No, it would be a relaxed ride to stretch her mare’s legs and possibly explore the fields as well. Cassie loved to ride along the plains of Hyrule Field until dusk came. Staying beyond dusk was never a wise decision, since the Stalchildren enjoyed coming out during that time. For now she only maintained her balance and proper sitting position as Epona ran to her heart’s content. |

| Working for Lon Lon Ranch proved to be a positive influence for Seth. The past few years focusing on caring for the animals helped him focus on being grateful for the things he had in life rather than dwelling on old memories. Despite his youth, Cassie's father was pretty forward when he said, he had no room for slackers so he really did put the crimson tuft youth to work the instant he was hired. Needless to say that there wasn't even the slightest sense of regret in his choice to come work out here. The fourteen year old felt as if he found a place he could call his home with the Lon family. A smile curled up his lip pondering idly in the middle of his chores for the day. He couldn't help but pose the question if his mother was watching over him wherever her spirit may be in the next life.
He still missed her even to this very day. The first year after her passing was the hardest. There many times in the middle of his labor when he wasn't working to his full capacity. During those slumps, it was a miracle he didn't manage to get himself fired for being so incompetent. Somehow he managed to pull himself through to keep moving with his life. Perhaps it was for the best that the road was paved the way it was for him to walk along. The one-eyed hybrid teen hammered in the final nails into the fence that was broken. It had to be fixed sooner than later so Seth wanted to get that out of the way while he had time today.
He wiped away beads of sweat that formed across his temple with a small towel he kept on him. The process took quite a bit of time. More work than he originally thought it would take. Cassie's father did offer to help but Seth insisted to take care of it while the man could enjoy the time off from working hard enough around the ranch as well. His attention was quickly diverted away after the fence was finished to hearing the sound of hooves trotting across the ground. His lone emerald orb flickering from his masterpiece on over to the Rancher's daughter. She was taking out Epona~
His smile softened watching as the girl rode the beautiful mare across the track. He wondered if she'd notice that he was by the fence post by the time she made a round about across the track. Though he wasn't quite so sure if that would be a good thing or a bad thing. Epona, while for the most part tolerated Seth to a certain level, didn't seem quite so thrilled with him being around all of the time with Cassie.
“Cassie!” he greeted her. He extended his arm out to wave at her when she rode across his way. |

| Cassie could not think of anything that she enjoyed more than feeling the wind rush through her unbound hair while on horseback. Nothing could get her heart racing quite like this, right? Well, there was one other thing that could. She bit her bottom lip as Epona loped around the track, wondering where Seth was. No doubt he was doing his own list of chores around the Ranch, which made her feel somewhat guilty. She really should be helping out and finishing out her own list for the day. It was just so hard to resist Epona’s large, blue eyes staring at her as she silently pleaded to be exercised beyond what the enclosed pasture could give her. Cassie knew her father would indulge in her occasional need to take a break, but that did not mean she should take advantage of such a thing. Yes, she was the daughter of the owner of this Ranch, but she worked nearly as hard as Seth and her father, too!
Just not right now. Her thoughts scattered as Epona neared the finish for her first lap around the track. This exercise was quite light, since the mare could gallop much faster than this. Cassie doubted that any other horse here could match her mare for speed and power. All of the animals were well cared for, but Epona would always be her favorite. It was alright, because she knew that Epona favored her above Seth and Papa, too. Her blue eyes widened when she caught sight of the person occupying her thoughts. Cassie had not noticed Seth working on the fence at all when she had left the stables. That familiar guilt slid through her once more as she tugged on Epona’s reigns gently to slow the mare down. Pink lips curled into a bright smile as Seth called out her name, and her heart fluttered for a moment. Even such a simple greeting sent a pleased blush across her cheeks. Luckily, such a thing was hidden behind the flush already pleasant from her ride.
Epona was not as thrilled as her mistress, though. She slowed to a stop and simply snorted as she gazed at Seth with just a little contempt. Oh, no, she would never needlessly hurt the one-eyed male, but that did not mean she liked him! Cassie carefully slid from Epona’s saddle and straightened out the hem of her dress to make sure the fabric had not slid upward. No need to appear immodest, right? “Seth! Working as hard as ever, I see. Sorry, I really should finish my own chores, but Epona wouldn’t let me,” she greeted back with a nervous giggle. Said mare merely nudged her nose against Cassie’s shoulder none-too-innocently. As if the mare could ever be denied a single thing! She really was a spoiled horse. |

| “Of course, she's as pampered as the Royal Family of Hyrule,” he joked playfully. Or rather, the mare might as well be from the insurmountable attention that Cassie gave her. He looked back over to the less-than-enthused horse who gave him a look nothing short of trying to tell him to back off. Seth didn't understand what he was doing that bothered the creature so. He did his best to care for her just like Cassie and her father did. “But yeah~ I finished fixing the fence post that got one of the horses managed to smash from a couple of weeks back.”
A smile from Cassie could brighten up anybody's day. Any time when the ranch had visitors, she was always there to treat them like welcomed guests, and helped her father go about business in regards to purchasing animals or their prized milk. Nobody could produce the top quality milk like Lon Lon Ranch could, after all~
“I don't suppose her Royal Majesty would be opposed to grabbing something to eat, huh? We could make dinner and have it outside,” he offered. Just because he had nothing against the horse didn't mean he wasn't going to tease Epona. Though he was sincere about his offer. They could cook something back at the house then enjoy it outside in the open air. Seth could even throw in some treats for the spoiled horse in her usual feed.
notes: Ones of these days, you'll be liked, Seth~ Just not now. >w> |

| Cassie did feel her cheeks burn more noticeably at the teasing remark. It was the truth, though. She really did give much of her attention to Epona, because she was a connection to her own mother. It had been a few years since her mother had died, but she still missed her very much. Epona had been helped into the world by her mother’s hands, and now she would continued to cherish that life for as long as she lived. There would never be another mare like the one behind her. The young mare knew it too, since she only whinnied just a little smugly. She was far too intelligent for her own good. “That’s a relief. It was worrisome that the horse manage to smash against it in the first place. A good thing Papa spent some time breaking him in after that, or we would probably have to rebuild the entire thing.” Willful horses were not a bad thing, since her own Epona could be stubborn when she wanted to be. No, it could be bad when they started destroying property in a fit of mischief.
Seth would continue to tease Epona until she showed him a more favorable reaction to his presence. Cassie glanced over at her mare as she snorted at the teasing title. If horses could glare, then she was doing so quite aptly at the redheaded male. Humming lightly, she reached out to slide her fingers along Epona’s velvet nose. Blue eyes became half-lidded as the mare was calmed from her irritation. “It would be nice if you two could get along. I really don’t understand why she’s so fidgety with you and Papa. Maybe a sweet treat from you will warm her up a little. Goddess knows she could stand a little thawing out, hm?” Luckily, Epona was enjoying the petting too much to understand what was being said.
“Yes, a picnic outside sounds like a wonderful idea. I’ll get started, and you can lead Epona back to her stall for now. Maybe you two will bond. Now, be a good girl for me,” she ordered gently. With a bright giggle, Cassie held the reigns for Seth to grab while she headed back to the house. The weather was quite warm, so it would be best to go with sandwiches and a salad for dinner. Hopefully Epona would behave well enough without ‘accidentally’ knocking Seth over gently like she enjoyed doing. |

| Take Epona over to her stall so they could prepare dinner outside, huh? Seth flashed her a boyish grin before taking the mare's reigns from Cassie's hands into one palm. His free hand lifted up waving off to the Hylian lass as she retreated over to the house. His smile waned rather quickly now that it was only him and the spoiled-rotten horse. He could already feel the sharp glares piercing through him as the young mount snorted shifting her head restlessly against his hold. “Come on now, Epona. You're going to get a treat now... even if you don't deserve it,” he uttered the last part softly. The horse had to have a killer hearing because the next thing he knew he was shoved rather forcefully with her head. What the heck?!
After letting out a sigh, he merely rolled his lone eye before tugging the reigns gently. Might as well make this quick and painless as possible~ Unfortunately, Epona had other plans in mind which didn't correspond well with his own. In fact, she didn't even bother to budge when he urged her to come along to return back to her stall. She just stayed in place staring up front as if completely ignoring him. Really? “Ok... I get it,” he frowned, “You don't like me, but that still doesn't change the fact that you need to return back to your stall. If you don't then I can give you your favorite tonight.” She seriously didn't deserve it in the first place for the attitude she was showing him. How in the world did Cassandra manage to make Epona act more docile when he couldn't even get her to move two feet out of the track? Darn spoiled beast!
“Either you move on your own or I'm going to move you for you.” That wasn't a threat. It was a guaranteed promise. Epona passed him a bored look as if not impressed by his heated words. He grumbled a couple of swear words. Ok, Epona couldn't say that he didn't tell her so! Seth gave the reigns some slack before moving off to the mare's backside. With one free hand he began putting force into getting the horse to move. Needless to say, she didn't even more a couple of centimeters - let alone he wasn't making any progress whatsoever in getting her back into the stall. “Move Epona,” he groaned, “Damn it, do something besides standing there looking pretty!”
He came to quickly regretting those words. The horse was too smart for her own good and literally took his words into consideration. Only it wasn't really convenient for the one-eyed male. In fact, he found himself in a bit of pain thanks to his words. Epona decided to be a smart-ass and lower her rear on top of Seth plowing him down onto the ground and deliberately sitting on top of him. “Get off of me, Epona! You weigh a ton!” he spat unhappily, “CASSIE! HELP!” |

| Cassie wondered if it had been a good idea to leave Epona alone with Seth. Her mare never acted out with her father beyond being just a little fidgety if he attempted to saddle her for a ride. She knew the young mare would allow Papa to ride her well enough, but she never seemed to like Seth for some reason. Oh, why did her mare have to act so childish with him? He had been with them for years, and Epona had grown up around his company? She bit her bottom lip as she moved around the kitchen to prepare the ham and cheese sandwiches. Everything would be alright. Cassie had asked her mare to act behaved, and she usually listened to her requests. Humming to herself, she filled the picnic basket with the sandwiches and a few cookies she had baked the morning before today. Not a large spread, but they did not need huge meal just to enjoy the pleasant weather.
The picnic basket was placed along the crook of her arm before she also placed in a thermos of fruit juice in there. Her head tilted to the side as she glanced towards the front door nervously. Her sensitive hearing could pick up her name being called in obvious distress and her heart nearly stopped for a moment. What had happened now? Cassie spun on her heel and darted to the door as she wrenched it open and ran outside. The sight that greeted her made her stop in her tracks as she just stared and stared. Epona was sitting on Seth? How? When? Why? Her train of thought seemed to halt before she suddenly burst into action. “Epona, no! Please get off of Seth! You could really hurt him like that!” The picnic basket was dropped as she ran towards her irate mare and tugged on her reigns.
Epona was a little over one thousand pounds of muscle, but clearly she was not resting a fraction of that weight on Seth. If she had, then his spine would have snapped in half. It was not humorous, because it would still hurt not matter what. Her mare lifted her weight from Seth the moment her mistress grasped on her reigns. Blue eyes stared innocently at her before she trotted off towards the stables on her own. Cassie huffed as she stared after Epona before hurrying to Seth’s side with concern. “I’m so, so sorry. I didn’t think she would do that. Are you alright, Seth? You’re not hurt, right?” she asked in quick succession. Goddesses, why did two of her favorite beings have to dislike one another so much? |

| What was worse than taking care of a stubborn young mare? Getting sat on aforementioned stubborn young mare. He simply didn't understand why the horse always seemed to want to find ways to torment him. Was this some higher deity's idea of a sick joke? Seth's life sucks so they were just going to casually add more misery into the formula but giving him more than hundred pounds of horse rear into his face. The crimson haired male struggled relentlessly to escape from the horse, but Epona proved to be just as sturdy as a Goron. She didn't show any signs of moving off of him any time soon either.
“Cut it out! This isn't funny, Epona,” he said with a scowl. Naturally, it wasn't hilarious at all to the Ranch's helping hand but if the horse could show any signs of human expression then there was no doubt in his mind she would be pointing and laughing at him. Thankfully, his saving grace returned from preparing meals for them, Cassie rushed to his aid to move the horse off of him. Seth crawled out and away from Epona before watching the mare trot back by herself to her stall. “I don't get it,” he scratched the back of his head, “Did I do something to offend her? I wish I could talk to her or something... but I don't think she likes me all that much no matter how nice I try to be for her.”
The eye-patched teen looked back over to Cassie who came over to his side rather quickly. He blinked a couple of times absentmindedly. His lone eye shifted about somewhat nervously as he offered a sheepish smile, and a light laugh. He nodded his head slightly when she asked if he was ok. “I'm fine. I'm sorry you had to see that. I should try to get along better with Epona so that wouldn't happen.” He rubbed the back of his head trying to ignore the fact that Cassie was exceptionally close to him now as well. He gulped softly trying keep it cool~

| Cassie had to hold back the urge to giggle nervously. There was just such an underlying current of dislike between Epona and Seth. What was she supposed to do about it? Epona never acted this way with anyone else. Even the visitors that stopped by the Ranch could approach the mare without too much trouble. In fact, she usually enjoyed the attention of the younger children longing to pet her. As long as no one attempted to ride her without permission, then all was well. She just seemed to be more finicky towards males that were not Para or married with children. Her mare really was a strange one. Well, at least Epon was back in her stall where she could not cause anymore trouble for the day. Cassie would deal with her later, since she was more concerned about Seth’s welfare at present. Honestly, she had a vague idea of why Epona did not like Seth too much, but she would never voice it.
Epona had been warmer to Seth as a foal, but it had changed over the last few months when Cassie began to feel more than just friendship for the Ranch hand. Now was not the time to think on those confusing emotions, though! “I’m sure she’ll warm up to you again. Epona can be rather stingy with who she lets handle her. Even Papa can have a hard time handling her when she’s in a bad mood. Of course, she hasn’t sat on him or anything like that. She just won’t let him move her,” she replied with a somber sigh. It was hopeless, no? How could she possibly choose between her precious Epona and Seth? She had known both for nearly the same amount of time, and both were very important to her. Cassie would just have to force Epona to act civil at the very least!
A sigh of relief escaped her when Seth assured her that he was fine. That still had to have hurt, and now his clothes were covered in grass stains. He could certainly use a good bath after that tussle with Epona! Well, one-sided tussle. “It’s not your fault. It’s mine for spoiling her so much. Usually she acts much better than that, though.” Of course, she was oblivious to the fact that she was making Seth somewhat nervous with her close proximity. As such, Cassie only took a step closer to him as she glanced up at him with a slight smile on her lips. “Are you positive you’re okay? Having mare like Epona sitting on you could not have been comfortable. Maybe a hot shower would help with any sore muscles?” |

| Seth had no trouble in regards for caring for the animals on the ranch. The other horses and the cuccos were pretty easy to manage as far as tending to their daily needs. From giving the necessary baths, to making sure they all had enough in their feed, brushing the horse's mane and tails. Of course, there would be the finicky ones, but none of them took the cake like Epona did. There was just something about the boy in hybrid boy that the mare didn't like about. What made matters worse was the fact that he didn't know what it was that was upsetting her about him. He felt bad that he couldn't understand her better than he did now. Would this streak of animosity come to an end?
“Yeah... but your father probably has more of the horse's respect than I do. There's that you'd have to take into consideration.” After all, if it wasn't for Cassie's father then not only would Seth be out without a roof over his head, but so would all the other animals. The crimson haired male couldn't ask for Cassie to pick between him and Epona. The horse was on the ranch way before he entered the picture, but without the ranch then Seth would be without a home to call his own.
“Don't blame yourself for caring for her. If I had an animal I loved as much as you do with Epona then I would want nothing but the best too for em'.” Did she even notice that she was making him uncomfortable? Apparently not. He swallowed down softly as she moved even closer to diminish what little personal space there was between them. “Y-Yeah. I'm fine, Cassie. I promise. If I end up taking a shower now then I'd miss out on eating outside with you.”

| Perhaps her Papa commanded more of Epona’s respect, but that did not mean she had to treat Seth so poorly. He worked just as hard as herself and her father on the Ranch, and even more so with how he felt in regards to repaying her father. Cassie knew he care for Seth like a son now, since he had more than taken on his own fair share of work over the years. No, there had never once been a regret to allowing Seth to live within the main house in the guest room. Papa paid for his clothing and other necessities, too! As such, Epona really should not be treating the poor male like a couch cushion for all of his trouble. Cassie simply did not know how to get her to do so, though. Perhaps a part of it stemmed from jealousy, because she knew her mare did not like seeing her affections deter to another. How complicated this was! Sometimes she wished Epona was not as intelligent as she was.
“I know, but what if I spoiled her too much? I don’t want her to act that way because of me,” she murmured with a soft sigh. The idea of this all stemming because of her was a painful one to consider. Cassie tried to make sure she did not pamper her mare too much. She did not overfeed her, nor did she give the other horses less good treatment in comparison. She always spent time with the other mares and stallions to see to their comforts. Epona was special to her, and there was no way of getting around that. She would just have to try and convince the palomino to act more civil at the very least. One did not have to be friends to act polite, right? Good manners were always a good trait to have towards anyone.
Her head tilted to the side as she watched Seth swallow just a little nervously. Was she making him uncomfortable? Blue eyes widened a fraction before a mischievous glint sparked. Leaning forward, she reached her hand up to gently wipe a smudge of dirt from his cheek. Cassie really should not tease him like this, but it was so rare for her to act on her impulses towards the older boy. One little act of flirtation could not hurt, right? “Hm, you had a smudge of dirt. All better now! Well, if you want a chance to eat, then you better hurry before I eat it all!” Cassie leaned back and spun on her heel towards her dropped picnic basket with a pleased smile. |

| Some mysteries were probably left unsolved. The case with Epona disliking Seth would be one of those puzzles he didn't think he'd be able to solve anytime soon. He felt bad in a sense that he wasn't doing a proper job trying to care for the horse if she didn't want to cooperate with him. Let alone let him near her to care for her needs. He pondered for a moment if his mother was still around watching him in his state now... how would she handle this? Another reason why he was really grateful to the Lon family for taking him in. He never knew what it was like to have a father up until recent years. He could sympathize with Cassie on a level too with losing their mothers.
He couldn't help but smile softly as she worried about how she was treating Epona. He shook his head softly protesting gently. “Nah. I don't think you're doing anything wrong. If she cares for you then that means you've done an exceptional job in raising her.” Besides, the horse was one of the many things left behind by her loving mother. He could understand both the emotional attachment not only between the horse and Cassie, but also the sentimental bond that keeps the blonde girl happy. A reason to keep moving on with life.
His lone emerald green eye flickered up. The fourteen year old didn't know how to take the glint that Cassie had in her eyes. He held his breath as his pulse sped up as Cassandra leaned in close to him. If there was little to no space now then the Lon girl dissovled what remained of it. Her hand lifted up to touch his face wiping away dirt that clung to his face from getting sat on Epona. His face burned a small shade of red unable to say a coherent sentence after that innocent little teasing. “Cheater! You did that on purpose,” he protested. He perched himself over on the picnic blanket and took a peak into the basket of goodies. “It's rare that we get a chance to eat outside. It's really nice outside. Spring is nice for these moments~”

Was she a cheater? Cassie was simply using tactics known to her to throw Seth off balance! Seeing his face burn that shade of read was quite amusing to the young female. He always managed to put her off balance, so it was only fair that she returned the favor. A good thing Epona had trotted back off to the stables, or she would have been unhappy with the display of teasing. Actually, a good thing her father was inside, too. Sometimes it felt like she had to watch her actions between her father and her horse. How did that make any sense at all? She sat down on the picnic basket with a small smile on her lips. Cassie wondered what her mother would think of Seth if she was still alive. Hopefully she would have liked him, but she could not live her life solely on ‘what-ifs,’ right? No one could lead a happy life if they only focused on the possibilities of a future that could never happen. “Spring is a lovely season to admire. The weather has yet to grow too hot, and summer is always the hardest season to work in. Well, winter is, but the heat is worse than the cold, I think,” she rambled slightly. Her cheeks tinted slightly as her jumble of words before she decided to stuff a cookie in her mouth to shut herself up. Not really, since that would be more embarrassing than chattering away! No, she just lightly chewed on the treat as she attempted to find a topic to talk about. Oh, why did her feelings have to make this awkward on her part? There had never been a problem before, but being alone with Seth seemed to make everything worse. At least Epona provided a distraction, even if it was by sitting on the poor Ranch hand. Cassie held back a giggle at the thought as she finished her cookie. “What do you think you’ll be doing in the future, Seth? I can’t imagine you want to stay here forever,” she said after a moment. In a few years he would be an adult, and he would not need to work on the Ranch for the rest of his life. Surely there were plenty of opportunities out there he could take advantage of. A part of her wished she could travel to places outside of Hyrule before she would have to take over Lon Lon Ranch. Oh, she loved her home so very much, but she would enjoy the chance to sate her wanderlust before she had to settle down. The thought of it was rather scary. A part of her felt as if she was still too young to be thinking of such things. In a little over two years, she would be thought of as old enough to step into such a role, though. LAIKA OF GS!

“The future, huh?” he straightened his posture up. He took a bite into a fresh made sandwich. As he took down his food he gave her question some thought. Not a topic he really thought too much about. Seth liked the pace he was setting for himself in life. The present has always been the most important thing to him because it was part of living in the moment belief. Memories will always be behind him, and there was no point turning his good eye out too far to tomorrow. Though what she mentioned after her question caused the crimson tuft take into consideration. When he swallowed down his chewed up food he came to a conclusion with his thoughts.
“I’d like to travel around. See the world for what it’s worth,” he replied back, “but maybe it’s because I’m in love with the idea of living off of the land. Traveling out to see the world in all of its glory. Meet new people, and see how it’s like out there.” It all sounded good as a concept, but actually pulling through with it? He wasn’t quite sure. Nothing was every set in stone in his life. Every time he tried to do so always ended up disappointing him. When he worked as hard as he could to try to provide for his ailing mother back when she was alive, he believed they would live the rest of their lives together. “If I do decide to travel out on the road then it’d probably to try and find my father… my biological father.”
Cassandra’s father was the only paternal figure he had in his life. Though that couldn’t really answer the questions he had about his real father. Why did he leave Seth and his mother when the hybrid child was only an infant? His lone orb was lost in thought dazing out up to the sky. Oh yeah, that’s right~ Cassie would be continuing in working at Lon Lon Ranch when she was considered an adult. “But hey~ We’ve still got time to kill before we have to worry about where either of us are going in the future,” he said optimistically, “Right now, I’m happy right here with you and living on the ranch.”
The sun by this time had already set off. Descended from the western skies leaving behind a blend of twilight, but he could hear the sound of owls already hooting away. They had to wrap up their meal time to bring the animals back to the stables, and care for their evening needs. He helped out cleaning up the picnic stuff so they could clean up quickly. Last thing he wanted was for Cassie or himself get scolded for slacking off by father Lon.
“Thanks for the food, Cassie. It was good~”
